In a speech delivered to the Birmingham NAACP branch, Martin Luther King, Jr., charged church leaders with apathy in the civil rights field. "you must do more than pray and read the Bible" to destroy segregation, King insisted. King also condemned racial segregation as "a wrong" and denounced Negroes who accepted segregation as "mental slaves."
