Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes faced adversity as the first black students at the University of Georgia, but they made it to graduation day on June 1, 1963. "[T]he only sounds to be heard were the cheers and applause emanating from our family and close friends," recalled Hunter. "No one else seemed to notice, and I remembered thinking to myself, 'This is how it ought to be,' as I sat there in my place." Holmes, after becoming the first black student at Emory Medical School, went on to become an orthodpedic surgeon. Hunter would become an award-winning correspondent and anchor for public television's The Mcneil/Lehrer NewsHour. In 1999 she became CNN's bureau chief for Johannesburg, South Africa.
