King gives a press conference in Birmingham, requesting federal intervention to bring justice to a city “in a state of civil disorder.” He also telephones Clarence Jones, highlighting the necessity of putting pressure for the government to address the Birmingham situation, and telegrams Kennedy for a meeting as soon as possible. At the nightly mass meeting, King and others urge nonviolence.
