King goes to Birmingham and enumerates the movement's two principal demands of the city: the hiring of black police officers and the beginning of negotiations for increased black employment. He threatens massive demonstrations if those demands are not met. King has demanded federal intervention in Birmingham ever since the deadly church bombing there one month earlier.
