After making multiple appearances around the country, King returns to Birmingham, where he oversees a vote in favor of more demonstrations at a mass meeting. The fall of 1963 witnessed a resurgence of political action on behalf of civil rights in Birmingham, where the black community had been galvanized by the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. The fall campaign's principal demands were the hiring of black police officers and formal negotiations for increased black employment.
