In order to avoid having to desegregate their public schools, the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors voted to close all its public schools in 1959. In the case of Griffen v. Prince Edward County School Board, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the closings are unconstitutional, since a state must provide public education to all its citizens regardless of race.
