James Farmer, National Director of Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), wrote a letter to President John F. Kennedy, offering details on the plans of the interracial group of Freedom Riders and the philosophy behind their actions, explaining that “Freedom Ride is an appeal to the best in all Americans.” He assured the President that their plans were “entirely open” and that they were dedicated to “the Gandhian principles of non-violence.”
