This letter to professor Hugh Watt at the University of Edinburgh is the earliest extant document indicating King's interest in graduate study. Six weeks after he wrote this letter King was accepted by Edinburgh. He chose to attend Boston University.

I am interested in taking work toward the Ph.D degree in Theology. At present I am a senior student of the Crozer Theological Seminary (U.S.A.), and plan to finish in May of 1951. I would like very much to start my work toward the Ph.D degree in the fall term of that same year.

For sometime now I have had a great deal of interest in Edinburgh, and would like very much to study there. I would appreciate it very much if you would send me an application form, a catalogue of the Divinity school, and any information that would be valuable to me at this point. Please let me know of the possibilities of my entering in the fall term of 1951.

Thank you for your help. An immediate reply would be appreciated.
