Celebrating 25 Years of the King Papers Project at Stanford: Open House and Celebration. The annual King Institute celebration will commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the King Papers Project at Stanford University. Institute Director Clayborne Carson will review the Institute’s activities and accomplishments in 2009. Also featured will be musical selections and an open house of the Institute.

Soundtrack for a Revolution. The story of the American civil rights movement told through the freedom songs protesters sang on picket lines, in mass meetings, and in jail cells as they fought for justice and equality. Featuring performances by John Legend, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, and The Roots; and interviews with civil rights foot soldiers Congressman John Lewis, Harry Belafonte, Julian Bond, and Ambassador Andrew Young.
Presented by the King Institute in association with African & African American Studies, Black Community Studies Center, Committee on Black Performing Arts, and the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. San Mateo County Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Celebration. The celebration starts with a pre-program of arts projects at 8:30 a.m. The celebration and continental breakfast begin at 9:00 a.m. and will recognize the 2010 Honorary Chairperson, Harold Brooks, CEO of the Bay Area Red Cross. Afterwards, participants can join up on the Freedom Train and head to MLK Day events in San Francisco.
