The Liberation Curriculum (LC) initiative of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute developed a high school curriculum to accompany the Remember Them: Champions of Humanity monument created by sculptor Mario Chiodo and scheduled to be installed in the new Henry J. Kaiser Sculpture Park in Fox Square, downtown Oakland, CA. The monument features 25 humanitarians who have inspired Chiodo through their "courage, perseverance, education, sacrifice, and a sincere desire to strive for a better life for all" (Artist's statement, RT website).
The LC curriculum is aligned with CA content standards and is accompanied by biographies of the 25 humanitarians. It was piloted in schools in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) in spring 2009. The instructional video below was filmed in East Oakland School of the Arts, illustrating the teaching of the curriculum to an urban high school class. Thanks to teachers Fatima Ghatela and Aryn Bowman for facilitating the filming in their classroom.
